A whip antenna is commonly used in the MF through UHF bands, is normally made from electrically conducting glass fibre whips, but may also be made of metal. Should ideally be of 1/4 (or 1/2) electrical wavelength. When this is not possible (e.g. in MF or low HF band and on most portable radios), this is compensated for by a serial inductor at the antenna footprint.
